whats the quickest way to improve fitness and build muscle at the same time at home with a weight bench, weights, exercise bike + running

I'm a Football Referee. Yesterday, I officiated in two games(one in the morning and one in the afternoon). I also had a game on Saturday afternoon.
For five days out of seven,I train by running,Exercise Bike,Treadmill or Aerobic Stepper for an average of between 30 - 45 minutes each day. I usually give myself a couple of days rest prior to a game 'to charge up my Batteries',so to speak.
It's very rare that I officiate in so many games in a weekend so as you can imagine,I'm feeling quite tired.
Is it a good idea for me to do any light training today? ..(By the way,I'm 49).
I'd appreciate any advice.

Well, I am planning on joining the gym for fitness, not body building, at least for now, because Im 22, and I trying to quit smoking. Im slim but im not fit at all, but I'm not sure what kind of schedule or plan I should base my "training" on. Thanks in advance.
